3 POEMS FROM LINI

THE BIRD OF PEACE

Finally
In that deep
Silence after all
the bombing
has ceased …
The stubborn bird
Staggers up onto
The high mountain
Of the heaps of debris
Looking in vain for
Something valuable
From this war

THE IDEALIST

Young and starry eyed
he loved to listen
to the symphony of his country,
speaking of a future paradise,
a haven for every one.

And hurrying home
he dreamed of playing
golden bells in this orchestra,
singing of glory and pride
for its people.

Alas his bells were crystal
and shattered when
he played his first tune.

THE PRICE THEY PAID

Once we skip-hopped and shared a life of simple fun,
and in school we sang most ardently our anthem.
Once we blithely played and exchanged our marbles,
but now we exchange foul and fatal bullets.

Once we cherished our ancient monuments, lauding our past,
today we destroy treasured landmarks with fierce abandon.
Our parents boasted about our mental and physical progress,
today they are silent at our revengeful powerful destruction.

Our fathers were friends, shared seeds, tools, and everything,
now they go alone to identify the remains of their off spring.
Once our mothers were friends, worked and laughed together,
now each mother has to grieve for her dead children, all alone.

They all paid high for their PEACE.

JUST A JOB POEM

JUST A JOB

nestled in the pristine mountains
clean air, tall green pines and firs
nice white homes garnished with
lush lawns full double garages
a town of lovingly tended gardens
it’s a great place to live.

he gets up to weed runner beans
in the crisp quiet dawn
to deadhead the climbing roses
walk the dog read the paper
to eat ham and eggs with the family
then drops his son at baseball practice.

he drives through guarded gates
to his office in a hillside
opens many locked doors
to a windowless room full of
big screens, banks of controls flash
he finds their peaceful hum soothing.

all day he presses keys moves images
studies virtual maps of a distant land
his hands command the keyboard
his drones discharge their load
he levels six mountain villages before
leaving to take his daughter to a birthday party.
